Commodore John Barry Medal Winners 2013

Yonkers AOH Announces Recipients of Scholastic Award – The Commodore Barry Memorial Medal for 2013

Commodore John Barry- Father of the U.S. Navy

The Officers and Members of Division One are proud to announce this year’s winners of The Commodore John Barry Memorial Medal!

The award is made available to all Catholic Elementary Schools in the city of Yonkers each year.  The award is given to a graduating student who excels in U.S. History and/or Social Studies.  A total of 7 schools chose to participate in this year's award program.  The recipients are listed as follows:

Sacred Heart School – Dante Scarnati

St. Ann’s School – Carolina Mendes

St. John the Baptist School – Damien Garcia

St. Anthony’s School – Amanda Sati

St. Peter’s School – Alex Ponce

St. Paul the Apostle School – Stephanie Brij-Raj

St. Eugene’s School – Anthony Piccolino

The award is dedicated to the memory of Commodore John Barry, an Irish Catholic immigrant who is recognized as the father of the United States Navy.  He was awarded Navy Commission #1 by President George Washington in 1798, making him the first flag officer of the U.S. Navy.  Commodore John Barry's accomplishments embody the immigrant struggle for success and serves as an example for all young students today.

Congratulations to this Year’s Winners!
