Sean Tallon Football Tournament

The Annual Fire Fighter Sean Tallon Memorial Gaelic Football Tournament

AOH National Director Chip Mclean at the 2012 Trophy Presentation

The tournament was first held in September, 2009 at Division One’s Annual “Hibernian Day” Festival held every year at Coyne Park in Yonkers.  It was the idea of Joe Hallinan, a member of The St. Barnabas GFC, and active supporter of the GAA of New York’s Minor Board, who advocated including sports into a day dedicated to Irish Culture.

Division One created a large trophy for the Tournament Champion, hoping that this would become an annual event.  The decision was made to dedicate the tournament as well as the trophy to the memory of N.Y.C. Firefighter Sean Patrick Tallon, who lost his life in the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

The first tournament that year was a huge success! St. Raymond’s GFC became the tournament’s first champions.

The Sean Tallon Memorial Cup is awarded to the tournament winner

Unfortunately, due to financial difficulties involved with the City of Yonkers, the Hibernian Day Festival ceased to exist after 2009, but the decision was made to continue the tournament as a separate event each and every Autumn.  Every year since then, the four local Under-8 Minor Teams that participated in the very first tournament take part in a 7-a-side round robin tournament to crown a winner of the F.F. Sean Tallon Memorial Cup.

The tournament is now held every October at Paddy’s Field on Van Cortlandt Park East in the Woodlawn Section of the Bronx.  The members of Division One are proud sponsors of the Gaelic Athletic Association of New York’s Minor Board in promoting Irish youth sports.
