President's Message October 2013

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Division One President Kevin Ellis

October 2013

Brothers,

Who knew that the months of September and October would be so busy a season for the AOH?  We are now into the fall season, and there will be a lot of events that Division One will be taking part in.  A look back on the events of September is in order.

We held our annual picnic along with the ladies of Division 19 in Redmond Filed on September 7th and everyone had a great time.  Special thanks to TA and Jim Walsh for all of the preparations and work that went into this event.  We also had a very successful day the McLean Avenue Street Festival on Sept. 14th.  We had several people fill out new membership applications and we look forward to having them formally joining our ranks at our Division meeting in October.  There were 20,000 people who attended the street festival this year, and I’m fairly confident that we will be back on Mclean Avenue for the festival next year.  Members attended The 5th Annual Hudson Valley Irish Festival on Sept. 21st.  Always a great job by our brothers in Division 18 Peekskill.  I was honored to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony at The Aisling Irish Center to open their new expansion along with brothers Mike Morley and Liam Mclaughlin.  There were several representatives of the Irish Government in attendance including Eamon Gilmore, The Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs & Trade, Anne Anderson, The Irish Ambassador to the U.S., and Noel Kilkenny, Irish Consul General in New York.  It was wonderful to see the entire community come out to celebrate the expansion of this vital neighborhood resource.

In October, there seems to be an event happening every weekend.

·        The weekend of October 5th The AOH National President hold his testimonial dinner in Suffern.

·        On Sunday, October 6th, The AOH, along with The Sisters of Life will sponsor a Respect Life Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC.  Members are reminded that the mass will begin at 10:15am.  Suits and sashes for this event.

·        Division One will sponsor The 5th Annual FireFighter Sean Tallon Memorial Gaelic Football Tournament on Sunday, October 20th at 1:00pm at Paddy’s Field in Woodlawn.  Division One Sports Chairman Joe Hallinan is once again handling the arrangements for this.

·        The AOH Westchester County Board will be holding a very special event on Sunday, October 27th at the Irish Cultural Center in Peekskill. Gerry Conlon, a member of the Giulford Four and portrayed by Daniel Day Lewis in the Oscar Nominated film “In the Name of The Father” will be on hand to meet and greet everyone.  He will be signing his newly released book “Proved Innocent”. A dinner and film screening will also take place that evening.  Tickets are $25 and will be on a first come first serve basis.

All of this and much more will be discussed at our monthly meeting and I look forward to seeing all of you there.

Yours in our motto,

Kevin Ellis, President
Division One, Yonkers
