Presidents Message November

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Division One President Kevin Ellis

November, 2013

Brothers,

The month of October was certainly a busy one for our Division.  Our members were present at many events, and more and more people are becoming aware of our efforts to give back to the local community.

Division One made an impressive showing at The Annual Respect Life Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC.  Fourteen members attended the mass, which was the largest group of any Division in the entire AOH contingent.  Great job everyone!

Our members were heavily involved in The North Yonkers Scholarship’s 2nd Annual Chilly Hilly 5k Run/Walk this year.  Division One was not only a Gold Sponsor of the event, but many other members served as volunteers and also participated in the walk.  Congratulations to everyone for helping to raise money for The Pediatric Center of Yonkers.

The 5th Annual Sean Tallon Football Tournament was another great success this year!  The tournament was extra special with the presence of Sean’s Mother Eileen and Sister Rosaleen, both who expressed tremendous gratitude to The AOH for teaching youngsters about Sean and his heroism.  Joe Hallinan does a wonderful job each year with this event!  Check out the highlights on our YouTube channel.

Sadly, there was also tragedy in Yonkers when we learned of the horrible accident that claimed the life of 15 year old Katie Gill.  Her sister, Lindsey, continues to recover from terrible injuries suffered in the accident, and the Gill Family now faces tremendous medical expenses to cover her care.  I started receiving calls from members of the charity committee almost immediately after the accident occurred, and I am proud to say that Division One will be pledging funds to help defer those costs.  We extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the entire Gill family.

Personally, I have been reminded several times this month how precious life is.  Whether it be praying for the protection of innocent life of unborn children, to seeing a precious young life tragically ended, to seeing my own mother approach the end of her life after a yearlong battle with cancer, I find comfort knowing that God does has a plan for all of us, and that faith can bring a person to a deeper and more meaningful understanding.  Thanks to all of the members who have expressed sympathy for my mother Mary, I will keep you posted on her condition.

As we look ahead to November, we will begin the nomination process for Division Officers at our membership meeting on November 6th.  I encourage members who are interested to get involved on the executive board of the Division.  New officers will always strengthen our organization!  Please speak to me if you are interested.

Yours in our motto,

Kevin Ellis, President
Division One, Yonkers
