PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Division One President Kevin Ellis

September 2018

Brothers,

I wish to welcome all of you back and I hope every member was able to have an enjoyable and relaxing Summer!  September is always a month loaded with events and Division #1 Yonkers will certainly hit the ground running.  First let me provide an update of some events that occurred over these past two months.

I attended the AOH National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky the week of July 11th and it was a great success.  The National Board was returned for a second term consisting of National President Judge James McKay, Vice President Danny O’Connell, Secretary Jere Cole and Treasurer Sean Pender.  Our two New York National Directors Liam McNabb and Dan Dennehy were also re-elected thanks to a strong showing from the NY State Delegation.  Division #1 Yonkers was recognized at the Convention for its strong support of the National Freedom for All Ireland Appeal and our Division Charities and Missions program was also recognized for its outstanding work for the years 2016-2017.

There were several resolutions adopted at the convention, which included specific calls for President Trump to appoint both an Ambassador to Ireland as well as a “Special Envoy” for the North of Ireland in light of the recent deadlock and looming Brexit crisis that is approaching.  The AOH National Board formerly endorsed the McGuinness Principles and have directed all Divisions to help raise awareness of these demands to ensure the British Government lives up to its word and enacts all provisions of The Good Friday Agreement.  These issues will be discussed in depth at our General Membership meeting where we will outline our approach to all of this.

Sadly, Division #1 suffered a tremendous and sudden loss of one of our own with the unexpected passing of Mike McHugh.  Mike was a true Hibernian in every sense of the word.  He was a man who was an extraordinary supporter of our Division and never sought accolades or credit.  I wish to thank all of the members who were able to attend Mike’s wake and pay respects to a man who made an indelible mark on the Yonkers community.  May he rest in peace.

September will start off with a flurry of activities and events beginning with a Gaelic Mass which will be celebrated at St. Barnabas Chapel on McLean Avenue Saturday, September 8th beginning at 12 Noon.  I would encourage every member to attend this Mass as we are committed to show support for the Irish Language here and in Ireland.

The McLean Avenue Street Festival will he held on Saturday, September 22 from 11am-7pm and once again Division #1 will be there with our Annual Recruitment Drive along with the ladies from LAOH Division #19 Yonkers.  We will once again have a Jameson Raffle and will require many volunteers to help man the tent and help sell raffle tickets.  Last year we were able to raise over $2,200 for our Charities and Missions Program at this event and I am hoping for the same success this year.

The Aisling Irish Community Center Dinner will be held on Friday, September 28th and we are very proud that they have chosen to honor our own Mike Morley as one of the honorees for the evening!  Please join me in congratulating Mike on a very well-deserved honor!

There are also several Irish Festivals this month and we will go over each of them, and we will also look ahead to October with the Annual Respect Life Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the planning of the 10th Annual Firefighter Sean Tallon Gaelic Football Tournament.

As always, please help grow our Division by proposing new candidates for membership.  Recruitment is the responsibility of each and every member and we will continue our push to make our Division bigger and better than ever!

I am thankful for the rest and I am prepared for another exciting year starting this week.  I look forward to seeing all of you at our General Membership Meeting at The Heritage on September 5th.

Yours in our Motto,

Kevin Ellis, President
Division #1 Yonkers
