President's Message March 2014

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Division One President Kevin Ellis

March 2014

Brothers,

The Month of March is here!  Get on your best pair of shoes, because Division One will be putting its boots on the ground in 4 St. Patrick’s Day Parades this year!  More on the parades in a little bit.

I first would like to congratulate our 2014 Division One Hibernian of the Year Kevin Hartnett!  This award has been given each year to members who have contributed greatly to the success of our Division, and Kevin is definitely no exception!  Kevin is a tremendous Hibernian who has assisted us in all that we do.  Kevin will be presented the award at our Annual Communion Breakfast at St. Joseph’s Seminary on March 2nd.  The breakfast is shaping up to be another great success this year.  I would like thank to Brendan Murphy and the rest of the breakfast committee for another outstanding job!

The Division is already hard at work beginning preparations for our 17th Annual Charity Golf Outing to be held at The Ardsley Country Club on April 28th.  This event is the primary fundraiser for our charities program, which reached a new level of achievement in 2013 with $25,390 in donations.  It’s never too early to begin lining up those hole sponsors.

Now on to the parades; Division One will be participating in the 17th Annual White Plains Parade on March 8th, The 10th Annual Eastchester Parade on March 16th, the 253rd Annual New York City Parade on March 17th, and The 59th Annual Yonkers Parade on March 22nd.

The Officers and Members of Division One would also like to congratulate the following Hibernians who are being honored in the various local parades this month.

LAOH Division 19 Member Cathy Marshall
Westchester County Aide to The
Grand Marshal-NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade

AOH Division 18 Member Cathal McGreal- Grand Marshal
Peekskill St. Patrick’s Day Parade

AOH Westchester County President Aiden O’Kelly Lynch
Aide to the Grand Marshal-Peekskill Parade

AOH Division 11 Member Paul Clarke- Grand Marshal
Sleepy Hallow St. Patrick’s Day Parade

LAOH Division 19 Member Allison Mosher Burke
Aide to the Grand Marshal-Yonkers Parade

And of course, our own

Division 1 Yonkers Member Kevin Hartnett
Aide to the Grand Marshal-Yonkers Parade

The fact that so many Hibernians in Westchester County are being honored for their service to the Irish Community is no accident, I personally know each one of them and all of them are so well deserving of the honor!  Congratulations to you all.

Finally, I want to remind all of you what St. Patrick’s Day is truly about.  I just finished reading an article on Irish Central.com about the origins of St. Patrick.  In the article, the writer states that To celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day is to commemorate his life and works and to give thanks to God for the gift of this great Saint, while imploring his intercession before the Most Blessed Trinity.”  This simple sentence captures what is at the heart of St. Patrick’s Day, and no amount of empty rhetoric, meaningless clichés, tired old platitudes, self serving politicians or disingenuous journalists can ever change that.

The members of Division One will be marching this month, and we will march knowing that the great St. Patrick will always be the focal point of our commemorations.  We will also march forth and take comfort knowing that the central message of St. Patrick’s Day will be preserved, defended and protected, now and for generations to come.

Wishing all of you a Happy and Blessed St. Patrick’s Day!

Kevin Ellis, President
Division One, Yonkers
