Dedication of The Commodore John Barry Memorial

Hibernians to Gather at U.S. Naval Academy for Commodore Barry Memorial Dedication

Small Scale Model of the Barry Memorial

The Ancient Order of Hibernians have long been dedicated to raising awareness of a true American Hero, Commodore John Barry, and they will gather together in the coming weeks to finally dedicate a fitting memorial to The Father of the U.S. Navy.

Commodore John Barry

John Barry was born in Wexford, Ireland and immigrated to America after being forced off of his ancestral lands by the British.  He was already an able seaman by this time and established himself as a wealthy merchant in Philadelphia at the outbreak of The Revolutionary War.

During the war, he offered his services to the Continental Congress and commanded the first ships to defeat and capture British warships.  He was so successful and respected that President George Washington presented him with Commission #1 in the new United States Navy.

On May 10th, hundreds of members of the A.O.H will travel to the U.S. Naval Academy to dedicate a memorial to Commodore John Barry.  The memorial is an eight foot tall granite monument just inside the Academy grounds.  The AOH was instrumental in getting permission for the memorial as well as raising funds to complete it.

Congratulations to Barry Memorial Committee members John McInerney and Jack O’Brien, who worked tirelessly to make this day possible.
