Division
#1 President Kevin Ellis recently appeared as a guest on the cable talk show “Emerald
Focus” with host Bob Stauf. The Emerald
Focus Show has been airing for over 25 years on the Optimum Cable System and is
viewed in Yonkers, Harrison and Portchester each week.
During the
interview, President Ellis announced that the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Committee had honored the Ancient Order of Hibernians of Yonkers with a 1st Place Westchester County New Rochelle Yonkers

2016 Commodore John Barry Medal Award Winners Announced

The
Ancient Order of Hibernians, Myles Scully-Division #1 of Yonkers is proud to announce the
winners of The Commodore John Barry Memorial Medal for 2016. The award is
made available to all Catholic Elementary Schools in The City of Yonkers. The
award is named after Commodore John Barry, an Irish emigrant who lived to become
known as The Father of The United States Navy.
Commodore Barry received Navy Commission #1
from President George Washington in 1798, making him the first flag officer of
the newly formed U.S. Navy. The Commodore Barry Medal is awarded to a
graduating student who has excelled in U.S. History/Social Studies. The
award consists of a certificate of merit along with a medal which is worn
around the neck.

The awards will be presented to each student at their
school graduation ceremonies beginning the weekend of June 10th.

Irish Republic Day in Yonkers

The Ancient Order of Hibernians attended the Yonkers City
Council Meeting on April 12th to participate in ceremonies marking
the 100th Anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland.

The Hibernians presented The City of Yonkers with a large
framed copy of the Irish Proclamation of Independence on behalf of the city’s Irish
Community. The City Council approved a
resolution calling for April 24th to be declared “Irish Republic Day”
in the City of Yonkers. A framed copy of
the resolution was presented to the members of the AOH Myles Scully Division
#1, which was founded in Yonkers in 1891.
Copies of the resolution were to be sent to the Irish Embassy in
Washington and the Office of the Irish Consular General in New York City.

Division President Kevin Ellis addressed the City Council
before the beginning of the meeting to thank the council members for helping
commemorate an important event in Irish & American History. “The Easter Rising changed the course of
history for Ireland, and the Proclamation was a document ahead of its time.”
said Ellis, “The proclamation is was also
unique in its reference to the exiled children in America.”
