President's Message January 2017

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Division One President Kevin Ellis
January 2017

Brothers,

Welcome to 2017!  I trust all of you had an enjoyable Christmas Holiday season.  Let me first cover some things involving our Division since the last message I have posted.

I want to thank all of our members who helped make our 125th Anniversary dinner a great success!  Special thanks to Dinner Committee members Kevin Hartnett and Mike Morley who put in a lot of work in the months leading up to the dinner.  Thanks as well to all of the members who helped make our dinner journal a success as well!  I also wish to thank my wife Stacey who did all of the work producing the dinner journal which turned out so wonderful!  We should have a final dinner report at our Division Membership Meeting on January 4th at Danny Mac’s.

I attended a delegates meeting of The New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade on December 1st where I was introduced as the Westchester County Aide to the Grand Marshal for 2017.  This is an honor that is simply beyond simple words or description.  I thank the membership for nominating me for this wonderful honor!  The official installation for the NYC Parade Grand Marshal and Aides will be held later this month and I hope to see many of you there!

Division #1 was also presented a Marching Unit Award for our participation in the 2016 Parade!  Division #1 Yonkers was awarded 2nd Place for “Best AOH Marching Unit”.  This is the 3rd time since 2011 that we have received this award, and it is due solely to the dedication of all of our members who make the effort to look their best on parade day!  Keep up the great work!

There are several things coming up this month.  The Westchester County Board will hold a meeting on January 16th in Peekskill, I will have details at the meeting.  We are hosting the winter meeting of the AOH Metropolitan Conference on Saturday, January 28th at Rory Dolan’s.  This meeting will consist of AOH representatives from the 10 downstate NY counties and we are honored to welcome them to Yonkers.  Please make arrangements so that you can attend this important meeting.

Our Annual SuperBowl Fundraiser Pool is in full swing again this year!  This fundraiser has gathered over $20,000 for our Charities & Missions program over the last several years.  We are very thankful to Brian Hartnett, who works hard to make sure the event is successful every year.  If you have not yet taken a box in this year’s pool, you will have an opportunity to do so at our meeting.

We are confirmed for our Annual Communion Breakfast on Sunday, February 26th at St. Joseph’s Seminary.  The guest speaker will be Bishop John O’Hara and the Yonkers Hibernian of the Year will be awarded to our own Peter Van Slyck!  This promises to be a wonderful day!  Flyers will be available at the meeting.

I also wish to congratulate our own Patrick McCormack who will be honored by The Irish Echo newspaper later this month in its Annual Irish Law & Order Awards Ceremony in New York City!  This is a truly well deserved honor for Pat, who has served the City of Yonkers with pride and professionalism for many years.  Congratulations Pat!

Finally, I am grateful to announce that our deceased members list did not add any names in the year 2016, and I pray that is the case for this year as well.  I look forward to seeing you at our meeting at Danny Mac’s.  Happy New Year to you and your families!

Yours in our Motto,

Kevin Ellis, President
Division #1, Yonkers

Division One Annual Pub Tour 2013

Yonkers Hibernians Hold
Annual Pub Tour

Members braved Superstorm Nemo and boarded the Pub Tour Bus

The members of Division One have always enjoyed a challenge, and they proved Saturday that they weren’t going to let a little thing like Super Storm Nemo get in the way of an annual tradition.  The Division went ahead with its Annual Pub Tour despite 10 inches of snow being dumped on the greater Yonkers area, and neither sleet nor snow kept these Hibernians from keeping their appointed rounds!

There is never a shortage of volunteers for this annual event!

The Pub Tour is now in its fifth year, and it held every February so that members can say “Thanks” to all of our Charity Golf Outing Sponsors.  The funds raised from our Golf Outing go to support the Division’s Charities and Missions program.

Our Promotional Coasters were a hit with Pub Owners!

This year, Division One handed out approximately 5,000 coasters emblazoned with the Division’s logo and contact information. This was the idea of Past division president Tom Allison, “Not only do the pub owners appreciate them, but they are sure to increase awareness of our organization and hopefully lead to increased interest in what we do”. The coasters were sponsored by Doubleday’s Bar and Restaurant and The Celtic House in Dobbs Ferry.

A lot of effort went into making this year’s Pub Tour a smashing success.  Thanks to Peter Van Slyck and Always East Bus Company for supporting this event each and every year.  We would also wish to thank Dennis O’Brien for having the coasters produced for us.  Thanks also to Stacey Ellis for the wonderful coaster design.  We are already looking forward to having next years tour even bigger and better!

The Westchester County Board of the Ancient Order of Hibernians held its annual fundraising event in Peekskill on Monday, and they took the opportunity to recognize the contributions of a special member of the Westchester Irish Community.

Division members Ken O'Brien and Tom Allison at The Quiet Man

About 75 were in attendance at The Quiet Man Public House in Peekskill to honor Peter Van Slyck, who is the current President of The Police Emerald Society of Westchester.  Peter is also a long serving member of A.O.H. Division One in Yonkers.  AOH Westchester County President Brian Kelly presented Peter with a Community Service Award for all of his contributions to the Irish community through his efforts with both the Emerald Society and the A.O.H.

Westchester Police Pipes and Drums Play Tribute to President Van Slyck

Guests were warmly welcomed by Quiet Man owner Cathal McGreal, and enjoyed the cozy atmosphere, wonderful food, and live traditional Irish music. The guests in attendance were also treated to a performance by The Pipes and Drums of the Police Emerald Society of Westchester.

AOH National, State, County, and Division Officers Honored Peter Van Slyck

This is not the first time that Peter van Slyck has been honored by the Irish community,  Peter was recently honored by The Irish Echo Newspaper for his accomplishments as a Yonkers Police Officer when he was listed in the paper’s first “Irish Law and Order Top 50”  list earlier this year.

Division One is proud to have Peter as one of its members and congratulates him for a well deserved honor!
