Allison Burke Named Aide to NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade

The New
York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has announced its Aides for the
upcoming 257th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on its website, and
LAOH Division #19 Yonkers President Allison Burke was named Westchester County
Aide to the Grand Marshal. The Grand
Marshal is Loretta Brennan Glucksman, Mrs. Glucksman is one of Irish America’s
leading philanthropic figures and is Chairman Emeritus of the Ireland Fund.

Allison
Burke has led the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians of Yonkers for several
years and has set in motion several new initiatives that has led to impressive growth
in it’s membership. Kevin Ellis, who is
the 2017 Westchester County Aide, could not be happier. “Choosing Allison Burke as the Aide to the
Grand Marshal is recognition of her dedicated work and accomplishments in
supporting the Irish Community of Yonkers, she could not be more deserving!”

Mrs. Burke
will be formally installed at a special dinner hosted by the NYC St. Patrick’s
Day Parade Committee on February 25th that will be held at Antun’s
in Queens .
The parade will step of on 5th Avenue 11:00am .

Hibernians to Honor Cardinal Egan at Awards Dinner

The
AOH Westchester County Board has proudly announced that it will honor Edward
Cardinal Egan at an awards dinner to be held in Tarrytown later this month.

The
Hibernians will present the Cardinal with its “Hibernian of the Year Award” for
his life of service to the Catholic Church and the Irish Community. Cardinal Egan served as The Bishop of
Bridgeport from 1988-2000 and The Archbishop of New York from 2000-2009. He is a member of AOH Division 3 in New York
City and has previously served as AOH Connecticut State Chaplain. He was also named Grand Marshal of the New
York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2002.

The AOH New
York State Vice President Timothy McSweeney will also receive a Community
Service Award at the dinner. McSweeney
served as the state coordinator for the AOH relief efforts in the wake of
Hurricane Sandy.
The event
will host a dais of Religious, Irish and Political leaders, including Westchester
Executive Robert Astorino, AOH New York State President James Burke, Msgr. Donald
Sakano-Pastor of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, Liam McLaughlin- President of the
Yonkers City Council, Noel Kilkenny- Consul General of Ireland, and John
Dunleavy- The Executive Director of the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee.
The dinner
is scheduled for Saturday, January 25, 2014 at The Doubletree Hilton Hotel in
Tarrytown starting at 7:00pm. Tickets
are $100 per person. Please contact

Division Member Peter Van Slyck Honored by County Board
Westchester Hibernians Honor Peter Van Slyck with Community Service Award

The Westchester County Board of the Ancient Order of Hibernians held its annual fundraising event in Peekskill on Monday, and they took the opportunity to recognize the contributions of a special member of the Westchester Irish Community.

About 75 were in attendance at The Quiet Man Public House in Peekskill to honor Peter Van Slyck, who is the current President of The Police Emerald Society of Westchester. Peter is also a long serving member of A.O.H. Division One in Yonkers. AOH Westchester County President Brian Kelly presented Peter with a Community Service Award for all of his contributions to the Irish community through his efforts with both the Emerald Society and the A.O.H.

Guests were warmly welcomed by Quiet Man owner Cathal McGreal, and enjoyed the cozy atmosphere, wonderful food, and live traditional Irish music. The guests in attendance were also treated to a performance by The Pipes and Drums of the Police Emerald Society of Westchester.

This is not the first time that Peter van Slyck has been honored by the Irish community, Peter was recently honored by The Irish Echo Newspaper for his accomplishments as a Yonkers Police Officer when he was listed in the paper’s first “Irish Law and Order Top 50” list earlier this year.
Division One is proud to have Peter as one of its members and congratulates him for a well deserved honor!
