AOH and LAOH of Yonkers Recruitment Program Announced
Yonkers AOH Launches Recruitment Drive

| There is no better time than now to become a Hibernian! |
The Ancient Order of Hibernians, (AOH) Myles Scully Division #1 of Yonkers has launched a
recruitment drive in to increase its membership starting in September 2018.
Yonkers Division President Kevin Ellis announced the
beginning of the membership recruitment program at the organization’s monthly
meeting on September 5th. “Recruitment
is the responsibility of each and every member of the Division, and I am
confident we will see great results within the next several weeks and months.”
The local effort to recruit new Hibernians coincides with
a similar call to action from the AOH National Board, which has begun to
attract new members all around the country with a purposeful media and online advertising
campaign.
Division #1 Yonkers will begin to reach out to the 11
Catholic Parishes in the City of Yonkers.
“We have approved a plan to advertise in Parish Bulletins starting with
Sacred Heart Parish and then expanding our reach from there.” said Ellis, “We
have an ambitious goal to be visible in as many as 6 Parishes Bulletins within
the first year alone.”

The Yonkers Division, along with members from the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians (LAOH) Division #19 of Yonkers will also have their recruitment and information tent at the Annual McLean Avenue Festival on Saturday, September 22nd from 11am-7pm. The tent will be located in front of Danny Mac’s Sports Bar at 869 McLean Avenue. Members of both organizations will be on hand to answer any questions potential members may have along with information about becoming a Hibernian.

Yonkers AOH Honored for Charity Work

New York State Convention was held at the Adams Mark Hotel Buffalo

Matthew
Buckley, AOH State Charities and Missions Chairman, was proud to announce that
the 18 New York State Divisions receiving the award collectively had donated over $430,000 state wide over the same 2 year
period.
The 2017
Buffalo Convention marked the 5th consecutive time the Yonkers
Division has received the Charities and Missions award dating back to 2009.

Navy Commission #1 from President George Washington in 1798, making him the
first flag officer of the newly formed U.S. Navy. The Commodore Barry
Medal is awarded to a graduating student who has excelled in U.S.
History/Social Studies. The award consists of a certificate of merit
along with a medal which is worn around the neck.

Commodore

Brothers,
The
Christmas Season is upon us once again, and it usually during this time of year
that we tend to look back and bring to mind all of our blessings. As a group, we certainly have much to be
appreciative and thankful for.
I am
extremely thankful to all of our Hibernian Brothers who came together to
sponsor The 6th Annual Sean
Tallon Memorial Tournament! The event
was able to reach an entirely new level this year and we owe a great deal of
gratitude for all of the AOH County Boards and Divisions who joined us as sponsors
of this important tournament. Their
support has not only ensured that this event will continue, but will grow in
size and scope as well. Special thanks
to The Tallon Family and The FDNY Ceremonial Unit, Tom Beirne, John Manning,
Aidan O’Kelly Lynch, Bob Nolan, and Vic Versace who are now welcome partners in
promoting Irish Culture thru youth sports.
In December
we will have our final nominations for our Division Officers at our
meeting/year end party at The Lakers A.C. on December 5th. We will then have our first public AOH
Installation Ceremony at Dunwoodie Golf Course on December 13th. I would encourage all of our members to make
every effort to attend the installation with their families.
The initial details
for the upcoming 2015 AOH New York State Convention have been made available,
and we discuss this at our membership meeting on December 5th.
It is also
dues time! Our AOH Membership Cards for
2015 will be available at our January meeting, so please get your membership dues
of $35.00 in as soon as possible.
Also
remember that we are once again holding our Division One Annual Super Bowl Pool
again, so reserve your boxes early. See
Brian Hartnett for details.

The Officers and
Members of Division One are proud to announce this year’s winners of The
Commodore John Barry Memorial Medal!
The award is made
available to all Catholic Elementary Schools in the city of Yonkers each
year. The award is given to a graduating student who excels in U.S.
History and/or Social Studies. A total of 7 schools chose to participate
in this year's award program. The recipients are listed as follows:
Sacred Heart School – Dante Scarnati
St. Ann’s School – Carolina Mendes
St. John the Baptist School – Damien Garcia
St. Anthony’s School – Amanda Sati
St. Peter’s School – Alex Ponce
St. Paul the Apostle School – Stephanie Brij-Raj

The award is
dedicated to the memory of Commodore John Barry, an Irish
Catholic immigrant who is recognized as the father of the United States
Navy. He was awarded Navy Commission #1 by President George Washington in
1798, making him the first flag officer of the U.S. Navy. Commodore John
Barry's accomplishments embody the immigrant struggle for success and serves as
an example for all young students today.

Extreme Makeover-Neighborhood Edition 2013
EXTREME MAKEOVER
NEIGHBORHOOD EDITION 2013
The Aisling Irish Community Center
together with A.O.H. Myles Scully Division One Yonkers and other community groups
and individuals will team up on Saturday, May 11th, 2013 for “Extreme
Makeover – Neighborhood Edition”.
This initiative will involve a
consortium of community organizations and volunteers getting together for one
day to give the Woodlawn/McLean Avenue neighborhood a “spring clean”. We also
encourage people to go out that day and do up their own yards as well as
helping their neighbors including the elderly, single moms, etc clean their
yards.
The A.O.H. Division One Yonkers
members will be available on the day to help in anyway necessary including
making basic repairs or improvements OUTSIDE the home. People would need
to sign up for this earlier and should call the Aisling Irish Community Center
at 914-237-5121.
If you know of anyone who would
like plants or shrubs planted in their garden (purchased ahead of time), this
will be done by adolescents living in the neighborhood who will do this with
adult supervision.
This is not only to help our
neighborhood look cleaner but to pull together as a community to assist it in
looking better and to take some pride in it.

if you would like to get involved in “Extreme Makeover – Neighborhood Edition”
on Saturday, May 11th, 2013 or if you would like some help with your
own home/garden or if you have an elderly neighbor who would appreciate a
helping hand or some “green fingers” to get their garden or the exterior of the
home in shape for spring.
