St. Patrick's Day Message 2014

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!

Today Marks the 253rd Annual New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The oldest, largest, and grandest parade in the world!

As has become customary, we reprint our St. Patrick’s Day Message first printed in the book entitled “250 Years of the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade.”

"For 253 years we've marched, through adverse times and weather.  We've marched in this sacred parade through years of occupation, persecution, and poverty.

We've marched through years of famine, war, discrimination and hate; years of working the killing jobs that no one else would take.

We triumphed over all with a courageous and joyful spirit that is uniquely Irish.

Through it all we survived and never waivered; we held the banner high; we never let the standard drop.

 And as always, we marched.

Today we remember the millions of marchers who came before us, those magnificent Irish souls whose struggles have given us all we have today.  We pray for them, we honor them; and we ask God to grant us the grace to always be as strong as they were.

On this momentous day let us rededicate ourselves to the struggle.  May we always band together to help each other, and bravely fight to overcome the world's adversities.  May we always hold the banner high and never drop the standard.  And may we teach our children and our children's children to do the same.

Whatever the future brings, let us meet it with the hope, faith and happiness of our forebears.

And always…..LET US MARCH."

May God bless this parade, all who march in it, and all those who work to maintain, preserve and protect the spirit and message of St. Patrick’s Day.

St. Patrick's Day Season Kick Off 2014

On The March!

Yonkers AOH Kicks Off St. Patrick’s Day Parade Season with Marathon Day of Events

Division One in The 17th Annual White Plains St. Patrick's Day Parade

Members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians consider the entire Month of March to be the “High Holy Season”, and Division One started off with a dizzying schedule of events on Saturday, March 8th.

Division One Marches on Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains

First up was the 17th Annual White Plains St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  The weather was mild and sunny as we stepped off just after 12 Noon on Mamaroneck Ave.  This marked the first time ever that Division One has participated in The White Plains Parade, and based on our wonderful experience, we plan on being a part of this celebration for a long time to come!

Raising The Irish Flag at City Hall in Yonkers

After the parade in White Plains, it was a quick stop to eat and travel back to Yonkers for the Annual Flag Raising Event at City Hall.  We were joined by the members of The Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, Irish Community leaders and local, state and national politicians.  Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, City Council President Liam McLaughlin, State Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins, and Congressman Elliot Engel were in attendance as well.  Everyone then walked across the street to St. Mary’s Church for the parade mass that was celebrated by Bishop Walsh, Msgr. Corrigan, and Mgsr. Barry.

We were only getting warmed up for the big event…….

After mass, everyone then traveled across town to Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway for The Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade on McLean Ave. Dinner Dance.  Over 25 members were in attendance to support the parade that Division One founded 59 years ago.

2014 Yonkers Grand Marshal Fr. Tom Collins and his 8 Aides

Congratulations to Kevin Hartnett, who was selected as an Aide to the Grand Marshal of this year’s parade!  Kevin will no doubt represent us proudly as he marches up the Emerald Mile on March 22nd!

So After 15 hours and 4 separate events, the long day was finally at an end.  Once again, Hibernians led the way in supporting celebrations of Irish Faith, Culture and Heritage.  The month is only starting!  We look forward to seeing everyone at our next parade in Eastchester on March 16th!

2014 Communion Breakfast

Yonkers Hibernians Host Annual Communion
 Breakfast at St. Joseph’s Seminary

AOH members and supporters fill the chapel at St. Joseph's Seminary

The Myles Scully-Division One of Yonkers, NY welcomed over 190 people to its Annual Communion Breakfast on Sunday, March 2nd at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers.

Here is a video slideshow of the Annual Communion Breakfast

Mass was celebrated by Rev Nickolas Zientarski, Dean of Seminarians and included several students who are due to graduate and receive their Holy Orders later this year.  As has become customary, the Seminary allowed the use of “The McSweeney Chalice” in the mass.  The chalice, which was created in Ireland and used in cave masses during the Penal Law times, is a priceless and historic Irish relic.

The McSweeney Chalice (center) was used in the celebration of the mass.

The guest speaker was Rev. Dave Dwyer, who is the host of “The Busted Halo Radio Show” heard nightly on The Catholic Channel (Channel129) on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio.  Father Dave spoke about Pope Francis’ exciting new message for Catholics worldwide.

Division One also honored one of its own as they presented their 2014 Yonkers Hibernian of the Year Award to Kevin Hartnett.  Kevin has proven to be an outstanding member of Division One.  Congratulations to Kevin and the entire Hartnett Family!

The membership also recognized Stacey Ellis for all of her work on our website, logo, and banners.  It is Stacey’s work that has us looking so good!

The officers and members of Division One would like to thank the entire faculty and staff of St. Joseph’s Seminary for allowing us to host our breakfast there each and every year!
