St.
Patrick’s Day Parades

Division #1 Marching Past St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC Parade
The
Ancient Order of Hibernians often refers to the month of March as the “High
Holy Season” and for good reason, as the members of Division #1 Yonkers participated in four St. Patrick’s
Day Parades within a 7 day span this year.
The Division once again marched with pride and dignity and was also able
to help honor 2 members who were selected as Aides to the Grand Marshal in New York City and Yonkers .
The White Plains and Sleepy Hollow Parades on March
11th and 12th were held despite bitter cold weather with
temperatures hovering around 20 degrees.
Division #1 nevertheless proudly marched in both with a proud display of
dedication and determination.

This year Division #1 marched in the 256th Annual New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade where several inches of snow which had blanketed the city only 2 days before March 17th. The NYC Sanitation Department did a wonderful job clearing the parade route.

This year
was very special as Division #1 President Kevin Ellis was chosen as the
Westchester County Aide to the Grand Marshal.
President Ellis greeted the Division as they came up 5th Avenue and marched with them as they
passed the reviewing stand.

The very next
day, Division #1 participated in the 62nd Annual Yonkers St. Patrick’s
Day Parade, where Cardinal Timothy Dolan was selected as the parade Grand Marshal.
Sean McEvoy was chosen as the Aide to the
Grand Marshal for his years of dedication to Division #1 and the entire Yonkers
Irish Community. This was a very well
deserved and overdue honor and we couldn’t be more proud of Sean on this day!

The Yonkers
St. Patrick’s Day Parade was founded by Division #1 Yonkers in 1955. The Division now assists the Parade Committee with
unit formation and then takes it place of honor as the last marching unit to come
up the Emerald Mile each year.

2016 St. Patrick's Day Parade Season
Yonkers Hibernians March in Local
St.
Patrick’s Day Parades
The Myles
Scully Division #1 of Yonkers was visible in many places this
month as its members participated in many of the local St. Patrick’s Day
Parades that were held across Westchester County.
The Division marched in a total of 4 parades over the span of 7 days in
what turned out to be one of the most successful parade seasons ever!

The first
parade took place in White Plains on March 12th, where
Division #1 marched proudly behind the Rockland County AOH Pipe Band up Mamaroneck Avenue.
This parade is fast becoming a favorite of the membership and we thank
the parade committee for hosting us once again this year.

The next
day, Division #1 marched in the 20th Annual Sleepy Hollow St.
Patrick’s Day Parade. This was a special
day as Dennis O’Brien, who is a
Division Officer, was chosen as an Aide to the Grand Marshal John Dunleavy.
Congratulations to the members of AOH Division #11 Tarrytown for the
great work they do in organizing this parade!

St.
Patrick’s Day is always a special day for the AOH, and this year was no
exception as The Myles Scully Division marched in the 255th Annual
New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
It was a great day with above average temperatures and we were able to
see so many of our friends and supporters as we made our way up 5th Avenue! We were honored to march behind Senator George Mitchell, who served as
this years Grand Marshal and was instrumental in helping the Peace Process in
the North of Ireland become a reality!

The fourth
and final Parade on March 19th was the 61st Annual
Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Our
members take exceptional pride of a parade which was created by The Myles Scully
Division back in 1956. Dennis O’Brien was the AOH Aide to The
Grand Marshal, who this year was Patrick
Quinn. Pat Quinn was the original creator
of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which has risen
over $220 million toward finding a cure for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s
disease. Division #1 led the procession into Mass at St. Barnabas Chapel and
then assisted with formation duties. Our
members did an excellent job getting the over 5,500 marching out onto McLean Ave.
We then took our place of honor as the last marching unit to come up the
Emerald Mile.

to those “Iron Man” members who were able to attend all four parades this year! The members of Division #1 once again showed
how Hibernians march with respect, honor and dignity.

Grand Marshal for 2016 Yonkers St. Patrick's Day Parade Announced
Pat Quinn Selected as Grand Marshal for Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day

Patrick Quinn - Yonkers Parade Grand Marshal for 2016
The Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has announced
that Patrick Quinn has been selected as
Grand Marshal for the 61st Annual Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade in
2016.
Quinn, a Yonkers native, is known as the creator of The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, a worldwide phenomenon that has raised over $200,000,000
to help find a cure for ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Pat Quinn’s Irish roots come by way of
Counties Armagh, Down, Cork, Clare & Westmeath. Patrick attended St. John the Baptist Elementary
School in Yonkers and graduated from Iona Preparatory School and Iona College
in New Rochelle.
In 2013, Patrick was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 30
and quickly went to work as a forceful advocate for research and development of
a treatment for the disease. In 2014 he
helped create the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which quickly became popular around
the world and help raise hundreds of millions towards research. Through his efforts, the Ice Bucket Challenge
not only raised money, but it also increased awareness of the disease in the
worldwide media and is credited with creating a renewed push to find a cure.
Patrick continues to be a strong and forceful advocate for
ALS funding and research through his “Quinn 4 the Win” Organization, which
holds events every August to help one day find a cure for ALS. He has spoken at countless events promoting
the cause, which has included addressing the U.S. Congress and speaking at dozens
of schools and other engagements.
Patrick was nominated for the Time Magazine “Person of the Year” in 2014 and has received
many accolades and awards for his efforts.
He and his wife Jennifer live in Yonkers since being married that same
year.

The Rain did not slow us down in The White Plains Parade
The Division participated in four parades this year,
marching in White Plains, Sleepy Hollow, New York City and Yonkers.
This year was very special as two of our members were
honored as Aides to The Grand Marshal in different parades. Kevin
Hartnett was honored as an Aide in the Sleepy Hollow Parade, and Division One Sentinel Scott McGown was chosen at The AOH Aide to the
Grand Marshal in the 60th Annual Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Participation within the membership has increased each
year, with over 40 members marching on 5th Avenue in New York City
in the 254th Annual NYC Parade.
An additional 12 parade sashes were ordered this year to meet the increasing
demand by members to march.

We would like to congratulate our Hibernian Brother Larry
McCrudden, who achieved a historic milestone this year as Co-Chairman of The
Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee.
Larry has served on the Yonkers Parade Committee for all 60 year of its
existence!
Here is a Video Slideshow of our Parade Season in 2015
So another St. Patrick's Day Parade season is in the books, and the members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians can take pride in how they once again led by example and will always serve to protect and preserve the true message of St. Patrick's Day!
