St. Patrick's Day Message 2014
HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!
Today Marks the 253rd Annual New
York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade
![]() |
The oldest, largest, and grandest parade in the world!
As has become
customary, we reprint our St. Patrick’s Day Message first printed in the book
entitled “250 Years of the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade.”
"For 253
years we've marched, through adverse times and weather. We've marched in
this sacred parade through years of occupation, persecution, and poverty.
We've
marched through years of famine, war, discrimination and hate; years of working
the killing jobs that no one else would take.
We
triumphed over all with a courageous and joyful spirit that is uniquely Irish.
Through
it all we survived and never waivered; we held the banner high; we never let
the standard drop.
And as always, we marched.
Today we
remember the millions of marchers who came before us, those magnificent Irish
souls whose struggles have given us all we have today. We pray for them,
we honor them; and we ask God to grant us the grace to always be as strong as
they were.
On this
momentous day let us rededicate ourselves to the struggle. May we always
band together to help each other, and bravely fight to overcome the world's
adversities. May we always hold the banner high and never drop the
standard. And may we teach our children and our children's children to do
the same.
Whatever the
future brings, let us meet it with the hope, faith and happiness of our forebears.
And always…..LET US MARCH."
May God bless
this parade, all who march in it, and all those who work to maintain, preserve
and protect the spirit and message of St. Patrick’s Day.

Division One Earns Marching Unit
Award From N.Y.C. St. Patrick’s
Day Parade Committee
The New York
City St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee presented Division One Yonkers with a
marching unit award at its meeting last night at New York Athletic Club in
Manhattan.
Parade Chairman John Dunleavy with Division President Kevin Ellis
Division One
was awarded 2nd Place for “Best A.O.H. Marching Unit” for the
2013 parade. The award was presented by Parade Chairman John Dunleavy and was accepted by Division President Kevin Ellis. Division members Bob Stauf, Peter van Slyck,
and Tom Daly were also on hand for
the awards presentation.
A Video Recap of The Award Winning 2013 Marching Season
“This
award is a tremendous honor for Division One”, said Ellis, “The membership works very hard to make sure
we look our best marching up 5th Avenue”.
Division One wasn’t the only Irish organization
from Westchester County to receive marching unit awards. The Police Emerald Society of Westchester (P.E.S.W.) won
1st Place for “Best Emerald
Society Marching Unit”, and Iona College won 1st Place for “Best School Pipe Band”. We extend our congratulations to all of our friends
in both organizations.
This marks the second time in the past three years that Division One has been recognized by the NYC Parade Committee. Division One also placed 2nd in 2011 in the same category. Division One also earned a marching unit award in The 2013 Yonkers St. Patrick's Day Parade, winning the Parade Chairman's Special Award.

Yonkers A.O.H. Division One Marches in
252nd
N.Y.C. Saint Patrick’s Day Parade
Division One Marches Past The Reviewing Stand on 5th Avenue
The
members of Division One braved chilling temperatures and an unexpected snow
squall while marching in New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, but the weather couldn’t
dampen our spirits and pride on this very special day.
Jim and Nancy Walsh
Division Vice President James Walsh
served as the Westchester County Aide to The Grand Marshal, and members could
not contain their excitement and pride.
Jim paid tribute to our Division by coming down off of the main
reviewing stand and marched with us as we passed the WNBC television
booth!

This Year's Parade was Wet and Wild!
This was the first year that the
membership traveled together by bus to the parade, and the feedback was so
positive that it promises to be the way we go from now on. This year, Division
One was also assigned a new place in the line of march, and members appreciated
the fact that this will be our new marching location going forward. Division
One also displayed our new AOH Division One pocket badges for the first time in
the world’s oldest and grandest parade.
After the parade, members gathered for
a parade after party at The Glenrowen in Yonkers, where we enjoyed good food, music, and a surprise
visit from The Pipes and Drums of the Police Emerald Society of Westchester.
Truly a great day and evening was had by all!

The Weather Did Not Dampen the Joyful Spirit of the Day!
Division One would like to thank all
of it’s members who soldiered through with dignity and pride, like Hibernians
always do. Congratulations once again to
our Vice President, James Walsh who proved to be a wonderful and deserving Aide
to The Grand Marshal, and thanks to the staff at the Glenrowen for a truly
wonderful time. The parade season
concludes later this week, when we will be marching up “The Emerald Mile” in The McLean Avenue Merchant’s Parade. Meet us on McLean!
