Grand Marshal for 2016 Yonkers St. Patrick's Day Parade Announced
Pat Quinn Selected as Grand Marshal for Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day
Parade
Patrick Quinn - Yonkers Parade Grand Marshal for 2016 |
The Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has announced
that Patrick Quinn has been selected as
Grand Marshal for the 61st Annual Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade in
2016.
Quinn, a Yonkers native, is known as the creator of The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, a worldwide phenomenon that has raised over $200,000,000
to help find a cure for ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Pat Quinn’s Irish roots come by way of
Counties Armagh, Down, Cork, Clare & Westmeath. Patrick attended St. John the Baptist Elementary
School in Yonkers and graduated from Iona Preparatory School and Iona College
in New Rochelle.
In 2013, Patrick was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 30
and quickly went to work as a forceful advocate for research and development of
a treatment for the disease. In 2014 he
helped create the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which quickly became popular around
the world and help raise hundreds of millions towards research. Through his efforts, the Ice Bucket Challenge
not only raised money, but it also increased awareness of the disease in the
worldwide media and is credited with creating a renewed push to find a cure.
Patrick continues to be a strong and forceful advocate for
ALS funding and research through his “Quinn 4 the Win” Organization, which
holds events every August to help one day find a cure for ALS. He has spoken at countless events promoting
the cause, which has included addressing the U.S. Congress and speaking at dozens
of schools and other engagements.
Patrick was nominated for the Time Magazine “Person of the Year” in 2014 and has received
many accolades and awards for his efforts.
He and his wife Jennifer live in Yonkers since being married that same
year.

Yonkers AOH Supports Catholic High School Fundraiser Program
Yonkers AOH Division #1 Donates to Maria Regina High School
Principal Valerie Reidy (center) with AOH Members & Students |
The members of The Myles Scully Division #1 visited Maria
Regina High School in Hartsdale this week to present a $1,000 donation in
support of the school’s recent fundraising effort. The Ancient Order of
Hibernians has had a long history of supporting Catholic Education since its
founding over 175 years ago.
Division Charities and Missions Chairman Jack McDonald, along with Treasurer Mike Morley and Past Division President Tom Allison were given a tour of the
school by Principal Valerie Reidy and
were shown where there are plans on making extensive upgrades to both the
school infrastructure and its educational programs. These plans include a particular focus on
making improvements to its computer and technology education programs to better
prepare its students to compete in today’s job environment.
“We are truly grateful for their generous
donation. If it wasn’t for supporters like the AOH, our efforts to remain
affordable while providing a quality catholic secondary education that keeps
pace with instructional technology would be even more challenging. We are
extremely thankful for their willingness to make a difference in the lives of
the students who are entrusted in our care;” said Mrs. Reidy.
Funds for the donation that was presented were raised at
the Hibernian’s Annual Charity Golf Outing which is held every spring.
Maria Regina High School is an independent Catholic All
Girls High School that was founded by The Sisters of the Resurrection in 1957.
If you are interested and would like more information in
supporting Maria Regina High School as they prepare to improve Catholic
Education for young women in Westchester, please visit their website where you
can donate online.
