President's Message - October 2015

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Division One President Kevin Ellis

October 2015

Brothers,

October is always my favorite month of the year.  Temperatures begin to drop and the leaves begin to change, reminding all us of that change is actually a constant in our lives.  One thing that will not change however is that our Division will be very active in the coming months.  September was indeed a very busy month for our Division, and the pace of activities and events will continue thru the month of October as well.  Here’s a quick recap.

All of us were honored to welcome our new Division Chaplain Fr. Matt Janeczko at our last meeting.  I have no doubt that his presence will serve to energize our membership going forward.  We had a tremendous start to our Division Raffle of 2 round trip tickets to Ireland at The McLean Ave Fall Festival!  Thanks to all the members who showed up and helped with our booth that day.  I was unable to attend the AOH Metropolitan Council Meeting due to a last minute change of work schedules, but our Sentinel Scott McGown was able to make it and he will have a full report at our next meeting on October 7th at Clarke’s.  I am very proud of our members Ronan O’Brien, Jim Walsh, and Dennis O’Brien for their service as volunteers helping with crowd control and other duties at The Papal Mass which was held at Madison Square Garden during Pope Francis’ visit to New York City.  Those members have served this Division with pride for a very long time and I could not have been happier to learn that they had been chosen amongst a very large list of applicants.  I am sure that we all look forward to hearing about their experiences that day.  Our Division member David Miller was honored by The Irish Echo Newspaper as a recipient of its “Irish Labor 10” Award for 2015 at a reception that was held in Manhattan.  This is a well-deserved honor for a man that has contributed so much to our Division over the past several years.  Congratulations Dave!

As we move forward into the month of October, we find that accolades for our members continue as Judge Mike Doran and Lt. Pat McCormack are due to be honored by The Aisling Irish Community Center at their Annual Dinner Dance at Lake Isle on October 3rd.  We could not think of any 2 people more deserving!  Congratulations to both of you!  Our Division will once again be participating in the Annual Respect Life Mass which will be held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday, October 4th.  The bus will be picking us up at 8:30am in front of McKeon’s Bar & Restaurant on McLean Avenue.  If I still do not have your name on the list of members that are going, please get in contact with me ASAP.  We will also have information available at our monthly meeting concerning our sponsorship of The Annual Chilly Hilly 5k Run as well as details of The 7th Annual Sean Tallon Sports Tournament which is scheduled for November 1st at Gaelic Park in The Bronx.

I am also proud to announce some exciting news that Division #1 Yonkers has made arrangements with LogoUp.com to have our unique Division #1 Logo available to all members who wish to purchase AOH apparel!  We have dedicated an entire section of this website to helping members display their Hibernian Pride.  Members can simply click on the tab at the top of our website marked "AOH Yonkers Apparel" to get started.  I will have more information available at our general membership meeting.

Finally, on an official note, since the month of October is the time when political campaigns begin to really ramp up, I must remind our membership regarding the AOH National regulations and policies concerning political activity.     The Ancient Order of Hibernians is a Non-Political Organization.  We are forbidden by our National Constitution (Article XVII, Section 6) from endorsing or supporting any political candidate, party or platform.  If you have any questions regarding this policy, please speak with me and I will be happy to help clarify any issues regarding this.

Also, I ask that you please keep our Past AOH Westchester County President & State District #4 Director Brian Kelly and his family in your prayers.  Brian’s mother Maureen passed away 2 weeks ago, and sadly I know from personal experience what tremendous loss that is.  May she rest in peace.

Yours in our Motto,

Kevin Ellis, President
Division #1 Yonkers
